thanks for the input.
I reset the points gap with cam follower at center of the cam key. It had been to the clockwise edge of the key. Some improvement but not right yet. While the resistance across the closed points is only 1.4 ohms, they are slightly miss-aligned. Also when I first opened the magneto there was a film of oil on all components; from all the back-fireing ,I guess. Maybe I need to replace the point assemblies.
Another possible problem with my magneto is the orientation of the magneto retaining ring. Per page 4-8 of my service manual,item # JM-6903, the script calls for the retaining ring to be installed with "tapered side down". It is drawn such in the upper left of figure 4-19. But the photograph in figure 4-19 shows it the other way up. The notch at the bottom of the ring, in the picture, is on the tapered side only. The tapered side, when up, registers nicely into its hold down plate with no lateral sloop but a little vertical movement possible.Am I wrong in having the retaining ring tapered side up.
