I purchased a pair of used Bravo 2 stern drive units. The seller told me the reduction ratio is 1.5:1. Unfortunately, the serial numbers are no longer on the units.
Without having to take the units apart, how do I determine the actual reduction ratios? I tried to turn the u-joint yoke (the drive shaft) 1.5 revolutions to see if the prop shaft turns one revolution, but the mark on the prop shaft does not seem to end up at the same point consistently. There appears to be quite a bit of rotational play on the u-joint. Is this normal?
Is it possible to count the teeth on the gears in the upper unit (drive shaft housing) by removing the top plate?
