" I was reading some past mess
" I was reading some past messages on here and went out and fired up my old Evinrude in a trash can full of water. I recalled not much cooling water seemed to be coming out of the return holes and sure enough the block was hot enough to sizzle water when splattered on it. I think this means I should rebuild the water pump at a minimum.
It also emits quite a bit of blue smoke which makes me think it's due for a rebuild.
I have no manuals for this motor and haven't delved into a complete rebuild before. I'm very handy with auto and lawn equipment repairs so I'm confident I can do it. My question concerns is it worth it? A full set of manuals is ~$80. How much would the parts and/or kits be to do the rebuild correctly? Is there likely to be damage from having run the engine too hot due to the pump not working correctly (more parts to repair/replace)?
If I end up in the couple hundred dollar plus range I might decide to just buy a new outboard instead of invest the time and money into rebuilding this one.
Thanks,
Matt "
