Dead tach 1995 200 hp

I have a 95 200 vindicator on a Bass Cat I changed out the computer dash and cant get my tach to work. We keep getting feed back to the tach making it climb when you turn the power on. We put on a new altnator and same thing. Is there any way to check the stator with out the motor running? Today we are going to unplug the grey wire at the pack and hook a tach at the motor and see what happens. Any ideas?

charge system ok and tack should work unless defective!"
