"i have a 78 evinrude 85 hp, i recently cleaned the carburator and it idles and goes into gear just fine under the hose with ear muffs suppling water but when i put in the lake it idles alot rougher(if at all) and when i try to get in gear it dies. I have tried to hold open the throttle some to see if i just need more gas, didn't work and sometimes caused it to die also. any ideas"

"Hey John...The idle RPM in gear should be 800-900..also, as you move the throttle open, is the timer base plate moving also..? The trottle plate in the carb. should also start to move at the same time...Any slack in the linkage can give problems..."
