I have a 1996 Johnson 112 HP outboard – Model # JX112SLEDR. I live in North Florida and normally we enjoy year round boating so I don’t winterize the motor. This year it has been unusually cold so I have not taken the boat out in several months. The last time I did it ran great. After one of the more unusual hard freezes I noticed some dark fluid coming from a tiny seep hole at the top of the gear case. It is a very small drip and did not even create a puddle on the ground. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this?

"That tiny hole would be a water drain. Normally any excess fuel/oil mixture, dripping down thru the long soot covered interior exhaust housing, will find its way out of any of those drain holes. It will always be a black substance.

Check the coloration of the lower unit lube to ease your mind simply by loosening the drain screw somewhat. If the gear lube is normal and not black, the gearcase seals are okay.

If the engine does not seem to run normally, have it checked over. A cylinder not firing properly could be the cause of that black lube you see.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:
