Damn pull cord

Good day folks. You guys are so awesome that I decided to ask a simple question. I got a 40 hp mariner (40 E 6E9 s 104752), 1985 2 cylinder. Basically a copy of those old Yamaha fm series.

The other day I snapped the pull cord, so I took the top piece off (which is on the attachment of either this message or my profile) which has 3 bolts, struck a new one in, winded it in, rebolted it, then pulled. At first it pulled and never sprung back in, then i rewound it again, and it's damn near impossible to pull. So, did I do something wrong, did I break something, am I screwed? Guys, please help me.

Also, when looking down at the flywheel from above, which way is it supposed to be spinning.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Robby

That starter looks like a good copy of an OMC unit.- ---------When you pull the cord the starter should turn counterclockwise.--------Then figure out which way the motor turns when running.

thanks raceone. Now, when you say the starter, do you mean the actual gear itself, the ones in pics number 2 and 3? From looking from above, does that turn counter clockwise or the piece thats in pic number one (which is the thing with three bolts thats actually turned up side down in the pic? Can I hurt it if I reasembled it and hauled it the wrong way?

Sorry for being stupid, i'm not good with this jargon. Can you be a bit more specific please and thanks? I hope I don't sound like a dick, and sorry if I seem offensive. i'm just not very good with this jargon.

All the best.

The pulley in #1 turns counterclockwisw when you look at it and pull the cord.-It always pays off to look at this stuff before turning a wrench. Yes you will do $$$ damage if you wound it the wrong way !!
