"I have a similar prob on an 89 Johnson 60hp except I didn't notice any hot air coming from the pee tube. I just changed the impeller thinking that was the prob. Old one was in excellent shape and had moisture in it from tub start. Worked fine last fall before storing for winter. Maybe lines are plugged (but where would water go if pump works?). Will check for hot air and plugged lines external of power head. Other than that I'm stumped."

I have a 50 hp Evinrude and several years ago had the same problem occur. Before I took on the task of changing out the water pump I checked to see if anything was plugged up. Sure enough the first place I checked was the tell tale hose. A spider had crawled up the hose and built an egg sack in the hose. After clearing that out when I tested again all was fine. Same thing happened again a couple years later. Good idea to prevent this from happening again: When you are putting the motor away for the winter just cover the opening with a tab of masking tape. Just don't forget to remove it in the spring before you take the boat to the lake.
