"I purchased this motor recently, the compression before I took it on my vacation and ran 230 miles on the motor was 1, 2, & 4 123 psi and # 3 119 psi, however once I returned they were 120psi and # 3 was 110psi, so I decided to remove the heads and replace the head gaskets, however # 3 has these pits only on the bottom of the cylinder wall is this a concern do I have to rebuild the engine, do I have a crack ring or something else. I have attached some photos I would appreciate your feedback.

"It almost looks like rust pits to me, as best I can see. The compression doesn't sound to bad."

"it is rust pits .prob from no fogging after storage/during.i would run it,clean up the heads/surface plain them and re install.
try a decarb with some sea foam it may level things out a little"

"It seems that there is some scoring on the cylinder wall, on the left side of the picture. Tough to be sure from the photo, but if it is there and feels at all rough things can only get worse.

You say the compression dropped almost 10psi. If it keeps going you are headed for a rebuild anyway. The sooner you do it the less it will cost."

"Tough call really, but the compression drop is something to be concerned about.

Run again and double check the compression, keep a close eye on it. A continues drop would in my opinion necessitate a rebuild as Tony states."

"The pits are rust from water

"The pits are rust from water sitting in the bores for some time, I would clean the block and heads and replace the head gaskets. Run sea foam through the engine and go out again...when home check compression again.

There are some varables when conducting a compression test ie; was the battery at the same level of charge, did you wind it over the same amount of times compared to the first time etc.

At the moment 10lbs variance is not a concern but monitor it"

deglazing the cylinder if with

deglazing the cylinder if within tolerances is recommended while appart.
it will help compression by putting crosshatch back on cylinder walls.
