Cut out switch

"I have a 1993 johnson 150hp outboard, and my mechanic just disconnected the cutout switch. The reason,he did this was because when i was out on the water, the boat would cut off by itself and then would either stay off or the rpms would go back up to what ever I was doing at the time. Is this part hard to change, and what might I expect to pay for this part? is it possible to change it myself? Can do some mechanic work my self."

"Albert.... Hopefully someone else will jump in here with knowledge of the circuitry and design of your engine. I retired before that model was manufactured and therefore that leaves me somewhat limited in giving advice.

However, I would suggest that you seek a second opinion from another mechanic about the problem as eliminating a kill switch as a correction to a problem is not a good thing."

"When You say 'disconnecte

"When You say 'disconnected cut-off switc', what did he disconnect?
Black/yellow cable at powerpack?
Emergency safty switc?
Stop circuit on ignition key?
Both ignition switch and cut-off/emergency are easy to change.
From Your stated mod year ign switch and cut-off is seperated, but if You have 'missed' it might be the new type where cut-off is incorporated in the switch."

"He disconnected wires, which

"He disconnected wires, which I believe to be black and yellow at the back of the motor on top. He unscrewed some bkack plastic cover, slid it over then discooncted them. They had round end connecters on them as well."

That means he disconnected the

That means he disconnected the stop-circuit at the power-pack.
Then remains to find out if it was the emergency switch or ign switch that created the problem.
Is Your safety laynayard hooked onto the ign switch or on a seperate cut-out switch?
