"Checked out the manifolds and elbows that I will be replacing tomorrow. Old style raw water cooled no riser just 3inch elbows out the back 1966 style. Question??? The manifold and elbows have 4 slots where they meet the gasket however only has one slot on the top (12 o clock). I was told that the raw water cooled uses one slot only so that the manifold will fill up with water and empty from the top slot to prevent hot spots and the fresh water closed circuit will use all four. Is that true or should I open up the other 3 slots 12, 3 6, and 9 oclock positions.
thanks

"Close. What you were told is correct but the closed system doesn't use any open ports, it has a block=off plate. Don't open the ports."

"You may be confusing core removal holes in the casting with water flow passages (as I once did). In the manufacture of the part, the foundry needs opening for the sand core (that makes the inside shape) to get out, hence the "extra" holes.

Here's a photo of what i mean. Note that only the big, round hole on te left is needed. The other three slots are core removal holes.
