"Hopefully a moderator can flag or pin this so it stays easy to find. Since this regularly comes up here is the procedure straight from the "Crusader Marine Engine Operation and Maintenance Manual"

1. Ensure crankcase oil is at proper level
2. Ensure battery fully charged
3. Operate engine until normal operating temperature.
4. Turn ignition switch off
5. Ground coil high tension lead to block
6. Remove all spark plugs
7. Open throttle to wide open position, ensure choke valve in air horn is fully open.
8. Install compression gauge
9. Crank engine to achieve maximum reading on compression gauge (normally 5-6 strokes)
10. Repeat on each cylinder

"A uniform variation of +/- 20 psi from 130-170 psi is permissible, however the compression of all cyclinders should be uniform within 10 psi."
 
I just had a compression test

I just had a compression test done on my old 454. All cylinders ranged from 135 to 140. Is that good??? A little on the low side??? No worries???
 
Mine where done cold. I got 11

Mine where done cold. I got 113-115 on all. 1966 boat unknown hrs on twin 350 Crusaders. Runs very smooth. I keep her below 3000rpm she's an old girl. Does 20knots per gps at 2600rpm. fast enough.
