Has anyone replaced the electric fuel pump on a 502 xli in a silverton 1996 41c? It turns on when the ign key is turned but then shuts off within 3 seconds. engine wont start due to lack of fuel at TB injectors.
I believe it is a Pierberg pump enclosed in rubber.
any recommendations would help
thanks,

The pump turning on for a couple seconds with the key going into the RUN position is normal behavior...the pump should continue to run after the engine builds oil pressure. are you sure the issue is that the pump isn't delivering the fuel to the throttle body?

Yes. Engine doesn't start so no fuel to tb. Crusader told me pump should run constantly when key is turned on. It does this to prime system and return unused fuel to tank. I am going to confirm the other engines fuel pump stays on this weekend and compare. I've never had this issue before and don't have a service manual

The person you spoke to at Crusader is an idiot because of the "mandatory safety feature" requirement imposed on them when they selected an electric fuel pump...just my two cents. Ask a marine surveyor (or anybody else that carries liability insurance for their professional opinions) and they will tell you the same thing.

The typical approach is to use an oil pressure switch to control the fuel pump. you can download one of the older owner's manual from crusader's www site to see they way it is wired on. They are, sadly, pretty common failure items. One way to check it is to bypass the switch and see what happens with the pump. Again, that is a temporary troubleshooting only technique.

Ok. Just replaced the ignition/fuel pump relay. Didn't work. I it a meter on the 2 wires connected to the fuel pump and turned ign switch to on. No power. I turned ign sw all the way to crank and still no power at the pump. I thought I should see 12 volts. Any other suggestions?
P.s. I turned the key on for the other motor and you hear the other fuel pump turn right on

Success. Found a 2nd relay exactly the same as the first one I replaced (starter relay) and used the one I took out and replaced it. Pump and engine started immediately. Part number is 98175 relay

a '96 should be a MEFI-1 computer and they were never programmed to be "smart" with respect to fuel pump operation. Even if it was reprogrammed, the industry uses the OP status as a control input....

Glad you found the issue...You would probably benefit from changing the relays in a preventative context...they become very cheap when purchased by the box...and keep a spare or two onboard
