"I'm new to the board. What a great site for information. That being said, I'm looking for some information on 454 EFI engines. I'm looking at buying a 1996 31 Tiara open with these power plants rated at what I think are 320 hp. I'm not sure of the major differences between the efi engines versus the multiport engines. Are both of these throttle body engines? I don't live close to the boat, if I did I guess I could pull the breather to look at the manifold to determine that. I'm getting conflicting information from my regular mechanics here. They are not marine mechanics . What is the difference in the performance of each of these systems? Which one would the experts and/or owners here recommend?

Thanks

Bob Glover"

"Bob, welcome aboard.

If your engines are original they are TBI (throttle body injection) MPI (multiport injection) was not available in 1996.

The MPI is a little better system as the fuel is injected directly into the intake port. TBI is basically an electronic carburetor. Both give the advantage of knock retard and electronic spark advance, performance is probably not noticeably different in a boat that size."

"Bob:

One thing to note about those "early" TBI units; some of the parts are hard to find. Most are reliable but when they fail finding the new stuff can be a challenge, the injectors in particular. Just something to be aware of."

Didn't know where to drop this in but........from the thread on RISERS you mentioned problems with the l-o-n-g hyperlink. Here is a tip....

Go to this website and shorten any long URL

http://tinyurl.com/

look around the site...you can even put a small "tool" on your browser toolbar that allows you to change any URL...good gadget."
