crusader 350 solenoid removal

I've replaced some pretty nasty looking solenoids, but never had to get crazy getting them loose. The thin copper strip heading into the starter would be the most fragile piece in the system to watch for.

Its straightforward. Careful tightening copper bolts. Usually the spring is in better shape than the housing. I will coat the ext housing with epoxy paint if it will see salt. You can get the sol. at car shops, realize there is a short and a long version. U will need the longer one.

Got it out, thanks for the heads up about the thin copper strip, saved the day..

the one I got from the parts store looks longer that the one I took out, you say that it should be the long one?

ouch; you have the short one. That was not my experience. 350 hp or ci?
That’s what she said!!
I have 454ci model 350, it was the only one in stock, it was so close in size I didn’t notice until I got home.
The boat is 30+ years old the last guy could have put the wrong one in?
its for a 1986 Chevy pickup with a 454.

The RTV usually is run around the 'tab' where it goes into the motor housing.....that's one way to provide a 'seal' to obtain the SAE rating....

Went in well, no issues, one post was unused had the letter R next to it, the solenoid I took out had a clipped wire attached to it.

the R terminal supplies battery voltage to the ignition system during starting....if you have the original points driven distributor, you may want to consider running a new wire....

Previous owner installed electric ignition and had just cut the wire and left it attached.

Since you have all been so patient with me here is another solenoid question,
Is this the slave solenoid? Where can I find this (looks like the standard 12V solenoid to me), I am also going to change that 50A circuit breaker.
thanks again!

Yes, that's the slave solenoid under the breaker.....you should be able to source one from the same place that provided the solenoid.

There are two 'favors' - one has a dedicated gound stud (two smaller terminals) and the other grounds thru the mounting bracket (one small terminal).

I purchased a marine solenoid and new circuit breaker, I’ll change those wires too, what size should they be? Looks like 10 or 12?
