Hi I have a 1988 silvetron 30X which was running fine until the belt on the starboard engine broke. The engine overheated and shout down. I replaced the belt but the engine continued to overheat. I replace the thermostat it started running hot . I replaced the risers now the engine reaches operating temperature (160) at a much faster rate than the port engine. I also had to fill the heat exchange with anti freeze and saw some in the bilg. The water pump does not appear to be leaking . What can I do to fix this problem?

Two belts - which one broke, raw water pump belt? If so, pump is probably seizing up and likely needs a rebuild.

without adequate raw water flow, you can change everything on the closed side and it still won't cool. best to determine cause of the problem before throwing new parts at the issue.

It was the belt for the alternator and fresh water pump however, what you are saying makes allot of sense I'll check the raw water pump.

Look for an air leak before the raw water pump (loose hose connection, crack in the hose, leaking strainer gasket, etc.) Also, check to see if your water inlet screen (below the hull) is not blocked by barnacles and etc. This is easily done by pulling the hoses off BOTH seacocks, then opening them and comparing the flows (since one motor is okay).

How long did it run hot? It's possible a head gasket went and is now leaking exhausting into the coolant. The coolant will heat quickly, run hot, but it also will show at the Heat exchanger fill as large bubbles.

I'd assess the raw water pump capacity first. if that's fine, get a pressure tester and see if you have any leaks on the closed side.

Off The water Pump Should produce 9 to 10 gallons per min at 1000 Rpm's check that and also what A/F mix ratio u using more A/F tends to run hotter

You said you found anti-freeze in the bilge. It had to come from somewhere. Maybe when the belt broke it hit one of the hoses and either loosened or split it and it only leak
s under pressure. Since everything was working well before the belt broke, I think you should go back to the beginning and take a fresh look at things and don't take anything for granted, new or not. Was it enough a/f to make it overheat ? Do you have to keep refilling the heat exch. everytime you run it and it over heats ? It would be much easier to figure out if you could narrow down which system is causing the problem, right now you seem to be all over the place. Look closely at the fresh water pump (anti-freeze) if the seal went it would leak a/f out the back through one of the weep holes and the a/f would run down the engine and into the bilge, you'll probably need a light and a mirror to get a good look. You could also take the belt off again and turn the pulley by hand, see if it makes any kind of noise or feels rough to turn. Also , how hot did it get when the belt first broke and how long did it run that way?...Lee

Sorry, I didn't realize that the original post was from back in July and I answered it as if it were a recent problem. Just gettin old I guess. If you got the thing fixed, I would be real interested in finding out just what the problem was, and I suppose a few of the others would be just as interested.

I had the same problem. Turned out to the raw water inlet screens were blocked with barnacles preventing adequate flow. Speaking of that, should I continue to use bottom paint on the screens, or just let them be? Is there anything else I could use on the screens to prevent the barnacles from growing? What do you use?

We should really start a new thread for this but because it's so old I guess it'll be ok. I paint mine with bottom paint but I remove all the old paint before I redo them, that way the holes don't get plugged up or narrowed. I think if you left them with no protection they would be covered with barnacles in no time.
