"My left side engine starts and runs good up to 2000 RPM. When raised to 3000RPM it drops back to 2000 RPM. I suspect the carb problem but don't know what. I had similar problem months ago. Carb was rebuilt and problem was solved, or was it? We don't take this boat often out, but still it should run the same as the right engine, which is great.
Could you help? Could there be a problem with primary power piston assembly and metering needles? Or high speed screws?"

"Check ALL the fuel filters?

"Check ALL the fuel filters?

I doubt any problem with the power piston and primary metering rods. There are no high speed screws.

Another item to check is the ignition's timing advance, especially with a mallory distributor used around salt water."

"Making rpm for a bit and THEN

"Making rpm for a bit and THEN dropping is pretty classic fuel delivery issue. Fuel filters, air leaks, kinked hose, swarf in the anti-siphon valve, etc."

"Mak, wouldn't the incorre

"Mak, wouldn't the incorrect timing affect the overall engine performance, and not just at 3000 rpm?
Dave, the fuel filter is new, there is no air leaks, no kinked hose, or swarf in the anti-siphon valve."

"Is this motor running off its

"Is this motor running off its own individual tank? If so, try using the same tank as the other motor. If that helps, start looking for a plugged anti-siphon valve, tank vent, kinked line, etc.

"Gene:

The timing is usuall

"Gene:

The timing is usually advanced as the RPM increase. Full advance usually occurs around 3000 RPM. If your setup still uses the "weight & spring" technique, they usually misbehave at the upper end of the advance curve (>2500 RPM)."

"Gene, I don't know if you

"Gene, I don't know if you checked the distributor cap and rotor but it just might be an easy solution. I had a popping and backfiring problem 3 yrs ago that was linked to a cracked spark plug, and bad contact between the cap and rotor .. In combination it was rough at best over 23-2800."

"I'm running twin 305'

"I'm running twin 305's in my Carver and when I first took it out I had the same issue on my port engine. I replaced the plugs, plug wires and fuel filters (just the small ones at the carb) and it corrected the issue.

Just be careful if you replace the small fuel filter at the carb not to knock loose the vacuum line or you'll create an entirely new set of issues..........

Ask me how I know this......LOL"

"Thank you all,
I will check

"Thank you all,
I will check this week the timing, the plugs and wires and the fuel filter. From my "old time" experience, I used the timing light by connecting the plug wire to the #1 cyl. and the battery lead to the battery. Then I would loosen the distributor base bolt lightly and adjust timing. Does anybody know what's the timing for 305 engine? Tnaks,
Gene"

"there should be a plate under

"there should be a plate under the plug in the back, at the flywheel cover. The mark on the flywheel may be hard to see. Rotate the engine until the balancer mark aligns with the timing mark up front....the mark should be visible on the flywheel.

If its a standard (LH) rotation, using the balancer mark (traditional way) is fine, too."

"Gene:

"Gene:

While you're at it, try checking for spark advance with the timing light. Rev the motor to 3 grand and the mark should advance dramatically. Drop back to idle and the mark should return. I've seen where the mark does NOT return (sticking advance) and that caused the mechanic to mistakenly time it retarded.
