"I recently picked up a 1979 28' Carver Mariner with twin Crusader 220's, which I suspected had 2 bbl Rochesters, but to my surprise they both have Rochester 4 bbl Quadrajets.

Is there anything specific about these motors that I should know? I'm assuming they are higher rated HP motors than the traditionally 2 bbl aspirated 305's."

"Oh, Scott....That boat is my favorite whipping boy for underpowered gas hogs. No doubt the previous owner was in search of more power to hold a plane, but the choice of Q-jets to get there was a really bad one.

Unless you own shares in Exxon, you need to determine the cruising rpm where those gigantic secondary barrels start to open and stay WAY away from it. Usually it's about 2,300 rpms or so, which may not be enough to hold a plane.

I feel for you man!

And yes, I have already experienced the thirst of my twins. Gonna cost my down the road I suspect. If you say the choice of Quadrajets was a bad one in order to gain power, what would you have done differenrtly to get the power needed to hold it on plane?"

"Oh Boy, I can't wait to hear this one !

We also have a 87 Bayline Cierra 2550 with a 305 ...What a barge this thing is. Makes a nice lagoon cruiser...as for get up and go, it takes 45-70 seconds to plane at 15 kts with 4 people and a full tank (100 gal)

I can see Jeff now cranking out an answer

"There's nothing wrong wit

"There's nothing wrong with the Quadrajets....! I think its fair to say that swapping carbs while hoping to gain more HP is the real 'bad choice'.

You need "cubic inches" to produce more torque, at a given rpm, to spin those propellers. Cahnging the gears is another option. Either way, that old saying will come true...you've gotta PAY to PLAY."

"I dont have enough hours on t

"I dont have enough hours on the boat as of yet to know how "BAD" the fuel consumption is really going to be. But I can say this, I'd rather pay for my fuel and be able to get up on plane comfortably as well as be able to get to where I'm going when I want to as opposed to the opposite. And she does get up and on plane rather easily. At 2500 rpms she's planed out and moving out at about 17 knots from what I can tell. WOT she produces just under 4k rpms and every bit of 28+ knots.

Now the real kicker is going to be "how open are the huge secondaries" when I'm cruising at 2500rpms?"

"The bigger concern is how ope

"The bigger concern is how open is the air valve; if it isn't open, it doesn't really matter where the butterflies are as the secondaries won't be active."

"Hey Al, my buddy has a 26' Bayliner with a single 350. He bitches all the time about how slow it is.

He took some friends out this past weekend and they returned in a short period of time. When I asked what the problem was everyone on board said the boat was too slow and without planing off they were all forced to endure the blistering hot sun and humidity at an ugly angle of attack."

"Those older Bayliner hulls were weird. My 85 (2850) would plane easily (350 SB Chevy) and cruise nicely at 24 mph with a 19 pitch prop (V-P drive), but it absolutely would not go much faster! Prop it down to 17 pitch and it didn't go a bit faster, though the 19 pitch held the rpms down to under 4,000.

Nor was mine a rarity, for I ran into others with similar results. One guy removed the 350 and installed a 454--and his boat only went a slight bit faster!

Jeff"

"'Fraid so. The later hulls---though they LOOK similar--perform vastely better. I went so far as to take a series of photos of both designs during winter lay up, but the eye doesn't tell the difference.

Any major weight differences b

Any major weight differences between similar sized Bayliners of later/newer years? I was told that a big change was made in fiberglass technology in the mid 90'sand I'm wondering if that made any difference finshed weights of hulls.

The hull design after about 19

The hull design after about 1990 is subtly but substantially different. You can't SEE the differences--I tried--but it's there and makes a huge performance difference.

"Hoping to getmy carb rebuild

"Hoping to getmy carb rebuild kits and electronic ignition conversion kits this week. If I'll get them on tested over the weekend. Hope to gain better transition off idle as well as overall performance and fuel economy.

Also scored a 2k Inverter gen last night from a buddy that I hope to try out this weekend. It's a like new Honda 2000i knock off that I plan on using while out to run the small A/C I have on the boat as well as a LCD tv and DVD player, but thats a topic for another thread."

"Tailspnr:

Don't let the Coast Guard catch you running that thing on the cockpit or any other deck! Running it on the swim platform is arguably legal, but...

For those of you who have never been attacked by a South Jersey green head, consider yourself lucky! Yes; they are THAT bad.

Jeff

PS: THey make 600 and 750 cfm Edelbrocks. Go with the smaller ones unless you're a racer."

It seems as if I've seen a few boaters in our area that use the small gens on their boats. Hell the person I bought the gen from is the chief of his flotilla in the Coast Guard Auxillery for this area. And he sold it to me specifically to use on the boat...go figure.

"I have read several notes abo

"I have read several notes about the Honda generator and the warnings about CO are substantial. I agree with Jeff on his comments...BOTH. Those flies breed in the salt marsh and bite like crazy. One trip, we had over 100 of them hanging onto the underside of the canvas top and every once in a while one would dip down and get ya ! Tried EVERY remedy known...so far none work"

"I think the eastern shore of Virginia can run head-to-head with lower NJ for the Green head capitol. If low tide in the marshes on a windless day isn't bad enough, try wreck fishing 10 miles offshore when the wind shifts to a steady 10knots from the westerly quadrant. Out of nowhere, they overtake the boat, preferring the first lee they discover and they swarm to turn the white cockpit into polka-dots...and then they get hungry!"

"Mark,

I'm gonna say...

"Mark,

I'm gonna say.....you win! 10 miles off shore I don't see them ( other than the ones we didn't get on the way out). One point about the polka-dots... we DID have that on one trip but they we all carcasses of the swatted flies. It REALLY looked weird to see that on the floor of the cockpit. It makes you see the actually count and THAT is impressive to see how many times you were probably bitten. ( of course the welts on your body is a good reminder)"

"Not me, the shore wins!

I've never seen the green heads any further out than the 10 miles. On many occasions we've seen the more common house flies out as far as the canyons - only with the gentle but persistant westerly breeze. I don't know how they make it that far but it can make an slow day of fishing absolutely miserable."

On the Chessie we see these pesky little biting flies (black and resembling house flies) now and then. THe only way to get away from them is to go swiming or mash the gas and get outta Dodge.
