"Last weekend I was out and my engine cranked up ok but would not engage forward or reverse , it would just rev up. Got towed in, luckily our summer is gone for the year. I have checked the cables and they seem ok, after a little more research I have turned the props and notice no movement of the engine belts. Am I correct that the coupler is done? If so, is this a do it yourselfer job? Will I have to pull the motor? I have a 29 ft. B-Liner xpress cruiser, Bravo 3. Any help out there?"

Look around the back of the motor and see if you can see the shaft going into the coupler and see if it turns while your friend gently rolls the engine over with a wrench on the crankshaft front pully bolt.

To replace the engine coupler the drive will need to come off and the engine removed. Parts are not expensive. Depending on how much room you have you might be able to move the engine forward but you'll need a foot or so of space. You can also make a tressle out of 4x4's laid across the gunwales (sp?) and use a wench chained to the motor to lift it out of the way. If you are a decent wrench you can do it. Don't attempt if you are not completely comfortable.

"Thanks, am I looking to see if the shaft turns? Will this confirm that the coupler is the problem and not something else? If so, what else could it be?"
