"I recently purchased a 19' 1986 Bayliner
It has a Force 125 on it (I think) and I wanted to replace the impeller and rebuild both carbs
When I ran the serial number, it came back to an 86 90 HP......
However it is a 4 cylinder engine and everything on the power head looks like a 125
Could the lower end have been replaced with a 90 L/U?
Would it fit?
Is this a common practice?
The engine runs great and all 4 cylinders have good even compression, should I be worried if it is a cross-breed?
Thanks,
Joe"

"Joe, Force was always somewha

"Joe, Force was always somewhat of a "mongrel" - in any given model year, the same horsepower, may have been built in as many as 70 different configurations (yes Seventy different models of the same horsepower).

What is more important in determining the correct parts is the model number. Your model number (for an 86/125) would look something like 1254X6A (as an example). And to further what I stated above, in 1986 there were 19 different 125 horse models produced.

The fact that yours is a 4 cylinder tells me it is definately not a 90, they were only a 3 cylinder. The lower units however, may have been used on a number of applications..."

"Thanks Graham,
I think this

"Thanks Graham,
I think this may be a Frankenstein Motor
It's definitely a 4 cylinder and the model number is 856X8B, which according to a second site checked is a 1988 85 HP
I'm not aware of any 4 cylinder 85 HP motors
So surgery may have been performed at one time
Do you know if the pump impellors for the 85 HP and 125 HP the same?
Thanks again,
Joe"

"Joe, yes, same impeller - sie

"Joe, yes, same impeller - sierra number 18-3030 (which Andrew sells on this site - see parts, upper right of this page) will fit both the 85 and 125's of the same vintage."

but I'm still a bit concerned as to what 125 HP parts to buy if it stops running
There seems to be a few different 125's and a serial number is required to differentiate between them
With my 85 HP serial number, I guess I'll have to wing it unless there's another number somewhere on the block?
Thanks again to all,
Joe"

"Joe, Merc's/OMC's hav

"Joe, Merc's/OMC's have a welsh plug (small silver disk about the size of a quarter) on the waterjacket. It contains either a serial or model number or both.

I don't remember ever looking for one on a Force, but it may be there.

I'll post a pic of what you are looking for (pic is of a little Ev but will give you an idea).

On larger motors it is sometimes hidden under the electrical box (where all the ignition wires hook up) but could be most anywhere on the waterjacket - worth taking a look...

"Thanks again Graham,
I found it under the electrical gang on the block after removing the gang plate
It is an 86 125hp power head and now I can get the right kits for the carbs
Still unsure who did all the surgery, but as someone said,
it works
Thanks again to everyone for all the help,
Joe"

"Joe, it's possible that someone wrecked the lower unit and simply swapped it out.

There is also the outside chance that it came like that from factory. I have seen some extremely strange OEM configurations on Force motors.

Use it 'till you kill it
