"On my merc,does it have a cra

"On my merc,does it have a crankshaft sensor ,my tach does not seem in time with my motor.I just put in new w/pump..
Or should I look for something else that would cause my tach to go eratic.And could this leave me in the water stranded if i do not repair it before i go out again(tach or sensor)

"Tach works off of the rectifier/regulator pulses. Check all tach connections, grey, black, purple. Check the battery cables, then start engine and check voltage going to battery."
