"I just got a call from my buddy's mechanic saying the crank seals in my 1993 Mercury 40hp are toast and that the enginge was not worth fixing. I did a compression test prior to taking it in and it had 140psi per cylinder. So my question is, if it has good compression but shot crank seals, why is it not worth fixing???? I posted the Mariner Issues thread and this is the 40 I took off for the 75, now it sounds like I have two bunk engines :-("

"it would have had to tear something else up. If its just the bottom seal and the bearing its a cheap fix in parts and a few hours labor. It would not be unusual if the crankshaft splines are messed up from the wobble of a bad bearing. But send it my way and I'll second his opinoin and have a spare 40hp

""Not worth fixin'&#34

""Not worth fixin'" is sometimes another term for "I can't be bothered or don't know how to work on it".

Most dealers would rather try and sell you a new motor than fix an older one - and yes, in their eyes 1993 is more than 15 years ago and alot don't want to work on it.

And I'm not kidding about that. A very reputable Merc dealer whom I buy many parts from, located on Lake Erie (Canadian side) has a sign above the service counter - "We regret that we can no longer service any motor built before 1994" - and next spring that will say 1995 - 15 years old is their cut-off...

Personally, I see a 1993 model as "just getting broken in", but it's not a 4 stroke or an Opti that can be plugged into a computer to tell the "tech" (which may have been in the early stages of learning how to walk in 1993) what "module or sensor" to replace.

A 1993 40 horse is a pretty nice engine and well worth fixin' - find another mechanic or get yourself a manual and make it a "project"..."

"Hey Graham,

I was kind of figuring that was the case. I went and got the Clymer Merc shop manual for it. I'm actually sitting by my buddy's place right now on the Fraser River over here in BC. Going to start on my other project, trying to get my 75 Mariner to run. When we're finished that we're going to tear the 40 apart and fix it. Told him it would be a good spare for the both of us. A brand new 75 Merc 4 stroke over here is 8600 bucks so I really want these engines to work. That and I like the old style look of them, matches my old boat lol"
