" Just took my 4 cyl ( chevy I think ) in for an oil leak, which I thought was around the lower dipsick connection on the pan.....service center replaced the o-ring and said was still leaking and they found a crack on the rear back bottom of the pan approx 1" long. First off, what could have caused this? nothing could have hit it...and the engine is rubber mounted? most importantly...they want approximately 600.00 to fix it as it requires removal of the entire engine to remove the oil pan.

The boat is a 1987 bayliner capri and isn't worth the repair bill to me .....I could sell it for 3000.00 I'm sure, as it runs great ( except for oil leak now ) and has only minor cosmetic damage. Anyone know of an epoxy or exterior fix for the leak that would be safe?

thanks "

" Scott,
The only way without removing the engine is to use a 2 part epoxy. Formula 27 works good because it is thick. Drain as much oil as you can. Clean the area, about 2 inches inevery direction away from the crack. Scuff up the area with rough sand paper. Mix the epoxy carefully. clean the area again with laquer thinner. Apply the epoxy, thick in the middle and thinner moving out. Should work if you do it carefully.

" Scott, I just replaced my sump because of a crack (leaking). Like you, I wondered why it cracked but upon removing sump I found cronic rust UNDER the paint, visually it looked fine. It cracked at the thinest point and there were many other spots ready to crack. Good luck. Aldo "
