I have a 86? Merc I/o 898 (305 cid) and I know little about engines. On top of both sides of the engine is a rectangular cover running from the front (bow) to the rear of the engine. On both sides of this metal cover is cracked. What is this and how do I repair these cracks?

"Those sound like exhaust manifolds, and the cracking is caused by cooling water left in them over the winter. Best thing to do is replace them since they are hard to weld properly.
If the boat was not properly drained for winter the chances are good the heads and block are also cracked. Does it run? Is there water in the oil?
That model was built from 1977 to about 1979, and translates to 8 cylinder, (1)98 horsepower. 198 hp that is. One of the more stupid model number systems that Merc has used over the years.

"Although it is possible that the Heads and block are cracked they might be Ok, the Block could have pushed the plugs out. Please answer , does the engine start?"
