I was looking at a 18 foot bay

I was looking at a 18 foot bayliner with an omc 2.3l inboard. In testing it I found a cracked block. I was wondering if the 2.3l block in the boat is like any other block produced by ford for the auto market. Are any 2.3l re-man long blocks available? This boat is practically free because of it. But I am hesitant to get it because of the block. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to the boating world. Thank you.

"The blocks are the same, your looking at around $1500 to $1600 for a rebuilt. Its always something with a boat, If its a raw water cooled engine you might be able to just seal the crack and run her... just a thought..."

Its fresh water only. I was reading another post and saw that some one had used jb weld. Do you think that might hold?

Don't waste your time with JB weld. I have seen it done several times. Sure it will hold on the outside. But chances are it is also cracked on the inside. The easiest way to tell: Is there water in the oil? Then it is leaking somewhere internally. The exhaust manifolds are usually cracked also. You may be getting into a money pit.

"My Dad's boat had a cracked block. Water was coming out of the side, he put jb weld on and then water starting going into the engine. The Exhaust manifold were crackecd, there was a company who could weld them and pressure test them. They are like new, The Jb weld held awsome, but were it was cracked and water getting in the oil, we decided to go with a long block and replace it. total cost was about $2,000 and alot of frustrations. My advice is to have some body else install the engine for you who knows what they are doing. If you do it yourself, don't forget to alighn the engine. If you don't its another $250 for a new engine coupler. plus time pulling engine out again and out drive to align engine."

Bullshit.. I've been running the Chris now for about 2 months with NO problems.
Clean the area VERY WELL...and put on 2 coats. I only patched mine to get me by the rest of the season.I keep a close eye on the patches, checking them before and after each run.I have run a half hour or more (out to the fishing area, and cruising) at WOT, with no problems.
If the waters in the oil , your dinked....if not...try it for the remainder of the season."

"I used a product used in power stations and industrial applications on mine. The product is Belzona, it lasted about 4 years before the crack migrated into an oilway. I have just had the whole engine rebuilt by Carolina machine engines replaced the cracked block and the crank becase it was spun badly for $1921 picked up and delivered. those Guys are very professional and courtious."
