hi i just put my boat in to ge

hi i just put my boat in to get it summerised ' got a call from the boat place saying they found water in my oil milky 'and my frost plug pushed out ' he thinks its a cracked block and said he could check it more to se how bad its cracked but would cost $700 dollers ' anaway i did not go that way and asked them for a price to fix it $5000 to 6000k would this be right ' why so much !!! engine is a merc 4.3

That's about right for a longblock. If the boat is 12 or more years old may be cheaper in the long run to put in a complete new "drop-in" engine.

I changed mine out last year; it only had 280 hours on it and ran like a top. You should make some phone calls to boat shops locally. Local will save you shipping.
Otherwise there is ebay, or the rebuild shops such as Jasper or Michigan Motorz. Shipping will be pricey though.

For a 93 you should definitely replace bellhousing forward with a Bobtail package, as was suggested. Then you have all new to start out with, instead of having to replace the starter later this year, the alternator next year, etc, etc.

"I upgraded to a 6.2 MAG MPI, so it was pricey. Not comparable; but I have seen 4.3 packages for 4000 to 4500 complete. A good used one would run you 2000 or so. Thats what I got for mine when I sold it.

Then pulled exhaust manifolds to check stater. didn't get any father. my manifolds have a lot of rust.(looks like they been in the desert for years.) Last year motor was running hot before winter. could rust clog any part of my cooling system? Also they have small cracks, will jb weld or something similiar hold up?"

"Hey buddy, I am upgrading to a 5.7 350 mag, so this weekend I will be pulling my 2007 Mercruiser 4.3liter Carbuerated V6 this weekend. I did the same thing bought a new last year, didn't know water was in block, cracked the sucka. Bought a long block assembly from US Engines in Kent, Washington for 3,400 and had it all installed properly by a mercuirser shop/dealer. Got the boat home and took the boat to the lake, it idles perfect, but backfires at like 1,800rpms. I've spent over 9,000 in parts,labor and trips to Havasu, AZ since this happened 8 months ago. So As I wrote on my thread, I am pulling out my motor transom and drive which is a alpha series, all the drive parts are new to, like two months ago new. The thing is Im still working on the motor, figuring out why its backfiring and not running right. But once I figure it out and am confident to sell it someone, I would sell the motor as a complete motor, like with everypart that is on your motor right now. The reason I would sugggest doing this and not going through the rebuild process, is that you can get seriously screwed by a shop that does your swap. But its your call, if you got someone you trust and know they are honest, it might be worth the risk. but man, I have just been through something that most people would have quit on a long time ago. I have spent 9,000 dollars on getting my boat runing after my blaock cracked, and still dont have it running, depressing huh.
