"I'm in Mexico and need to

"I'm in Mexico and need to replace my drive coupler on my 1986 mercruiser 260hp 350cid there are not any really qualified Mercruiser people down here. i found some good info about the out drive removal but nothing about pulling the engine. i have disconnected all the wires, shift cables, and the two bolts at the back of the engine and the two at front(motor mounts)plus the power steering and the water line on right side of motor. does any one have some good advice for pulling it then reinstalling? maybe step by step process?"

"Welcome Daniel:

Get a merc

"Welcome Daniel:

Get a mercruiser ONLY set of engine and outdrive manuals from eBay for the year of your engine. The OD has to come off first to pull the engine. You'll need an engine/OD alignment tool to reinstall it.

While doing all of this work, it's a good time to replace some parts. They may still work but are labor expensive while the parts are cheaper. Examples are a bellows and water inlet hose kit, gimbal bearing and U-loints if needed, shift cable, various bushings and definitely examine the engine mount bases for structural integrity (rot) and the front and rear mounts. Carefully check the entire gimbal assy. for worn parts."

"thanks for the info a manual

"thanks for the info a manual would be nice, but they are hard to come by where i'm at and shipping stuff here is a real chore. i found water in the drive bellows(it is not very old just from last season when i had a boat guy in the U.S. replace them)i can't find any holes or worn spots in it. is there some other way water could have gotten in there that i need to check? the boat got loaded without the plug a little while back enough water got in that i had to replace the starter. could water have gotten in that way?"

is there anything particular i

is there anything particular i should know about dropping the motor back in place after i put the new coupled on

"For easy oil changes, install

"For easy oil changes, install a remote oil change kit consisting of a long hose that bolts in place of the pan bolt and you drain the oil out thru the bilge drain by pulling the hose thru and removing a plug. Not expensive at all.

Make sure all your ground wires and 12 volt wires are cleaned and tight. Do any bilge area maintenance before you install it. Take a good look at the engine and perform any PM needed while it's out; cleaning, paint touchup etc."
