second question, i replace all the bellows ect. late last summer with a seirra kit, the drice bellows is all cracked near the clamps and the internal support wire molded in the bellows islf is showning in several places. should i be looking at a different brand? it only last 10 months and was in the water only once

"Sierra bellows are not quite

"Sierra bellows are not quite the quality of the Volvo.... however, they do not normally fail as early as you describe here.
*Are you storing the drive FULL UP by chance? (this shortens their usable life span)
*Were they installed in the correct UP position?
*Was perhaps the wire out of position?
*Was it perhaps over tightened?"

"it was stored in the down pos

"it was stored in the down position, i'm a little confused when you Were they installed in the correct UP position? and Was perhaps the wire out of position? i looked in the maunal and i couldnt find anything that refered to it.perhaps it was just it was just a bad lot i appered to be dry rotted. the clamps sre in the right position so am at a loss was to why the failure, does volvo have a part number or kit number?thanks

"OEM is same from the AQ 250 thru the C, D, E series drives. Go to V/P website, MPE.com or D/R and you'll find it."

"I ran into that same issue on

"I ran into that same issue on Volvo and after market parts. I was told by a lot of people to go OEM only on the bellows. After markets are not made to the standards i guess, and usually made in china, the problem u had was common the bellows only lasting barely 1 season. Now as these older AQ series dinosaur engines get older parts are getting scarcer to come by, i had a bear of a time finding an OEM water intake pipe for my drive, and had to order the sierra one, same with the orings i ordered were all sierras. The bellows i got was VP and the u joints were NauticPro heavy duty. While im not downing after market parts, im just saying watch what you get, sometime the quality aint the same"

I have been running Sierra bel

I have been running Sierra bellows on my 290 for a few years now without any problems. Will change it this year when I do the U joints and will again get the Sierra. They have worked fine for me.

Have a great day

Rob.

"i think i may have just got a blem by accident the exhaust hose is fine, it happens. i'll stay with Sierra"

"I did some more reasearch on

"I did some more reasearch on the sierra bellows, read that the big clamp that tightens then down can chew into the bellows and cause premature failure. Something about the volvos having a different shape to them. I dunno thats just whats been floating around the net.

I found my VP bellow for my 270 on ebay $45 shipped"

"i just checked that and i thi

"i just checked that and i think i'm good with that. i have to aplogize, i wasnt Sierra it was some other outfit on line so as i remeMber, the exhaust bellows i did get from Sierra and its in perfect shape because i needed the one with the flapper and I could only find one at Sierra. the bellows I got just fell apart, dry rot !!. when I get it off I'll take some pic's and post them just to let others know thAT going cheaper is expensive! I'll never make that mistake again. I wish I could find the box the drive bellows came in just give everyone an FYI!
Thanks

I dont completly dis like sier

I dont completly dis like sierra. If it werent for them some wear items on my boat wouldnt have replacements. For us older boat owners we need aftermarkets on a lot of our parts. I think i know what brand bellows your talking about and yes they are junk. Now if they could come otu with a bellows made out of a a material that wont rot but is still pliable enough to tilt the drives......

"Ah, the band clamps!
Try to

"Ah, the band clamps!
Try to always use the OEM band clamps.... the clamps provided with the A market bellows are crap! The OEM offers a reduced means of tugging on the rubber as the clamp diameter changes. (note the inside band that actually contacts the rubber.... it will be absent of any worm drive slots)
A little WD-40 here works well too! This is not a guess..... it has been tried/proven to be just fine! No issues in 20+ years.

Ah, the UP marking! I believe that even Sierra is marking UP on the bellows now.... pay attention to this when installing!
Do not over-tighten the band clamps. It does not require excessive force for them to seal.

Side note: I never use exhaust bellows equipped with a flapper if the drive itself is equipped with one!
No need to restrict exhaust flow any more than what the "outlet flapper" itself already does, IMO."

question

thanks ricardo
I pulled it off the drive boot today and its definately dry rot and it was an after market part( not sierra) the exhaust is ok that was a sierra part the drive lasks the flapper so thats why I went with hose with the flapper. can you tell me if I had not put the drive down so it locked in place would that affect the planeing issue I'm curios if tha would affect it.
I have sent the prop out to be rebuilt.
thanks
