"Gents,

Working on a 1991 Silverton Express 38 with 502 Crusaders. Somone rebuilt this guy's engines a couple years ago and the counter rotator was rebuilt to spin in the normal direction. Both now turn in the same direction (yes... he uses reverse to go forward). No the V drives aren't fried yet.

Question: What parts does it take to convert one of these back to a counter rotating engine?

-Camshaft
-Cam Drive
-Starter
-Oil Pump????
What else? Many thanks.

Hays"

"Not likely a rebuilder would reverse the rotation, since that is more work. More likely a LH short block was substituted. In any case, your list is good, strike the oil pump, but you may check out the rear seal part nos. On the two piece seals, the RH and LH are different, I'm not sure about your one piece seal. Also, since you are changing the cam, the lifters must also be changed."

Right. It may have had a short block swap. Anything in the distributor need to go?

My client thinks it might be easier to just get a left hand v-drive.

"MistaHays:

if they are the Gen V originals, I believe cam, cam gears, and starter are all you need. The Merc Manual #15 will cover all the innards as they are GM products. If they are Gen VI - I can't say other than to check #23?

The cooling pump will also need to be checked...

I'd be inclined to go over the gear as well...it may be fine but better to be sure than get it afterwards."

"They aren't gen VI if they're '91, what are the SNs?. How do you know he doesn't already have a bi-directional v-drive? Every unit built for the last 6-7 years has used reverse to go forward, so that's not a big deal. What make and model are they and are they fixed or remote? If he has been running it like this, most likely he has the right gear. I would not consider converting the engine."

"My client tells me they are 1996 engines. I'll find out more. The V drives are 1991, but i'll need to get make and numbers. He was told that the reverse gear wouldn't hold up in the model he has.

Water pump as well? That would make sense.

Thanks guys."
