My 1977 55hp johnson is over

My 1977 55hp johnson is over heating. I have replaced the water pump and that has made no difference. I am going to replace the thermostat tonight but I am doubting that is the problem. Someone told me that I can have a blown head gasket and not lose any compression but it could cause the engine to overheat. is this something I should check. Is their anything else I should check first?

" Chris,

If the head gasket

" Chris,

If the head gasket does not solve the problem, you are probably going to have to remove the powerhead and check the water tube for an obstruction at the top of the tube, or the powerhead gasket for leakage.

Before you do that you might also inspect the exhause cover and plate for leaky gaskets, debris, or corrosion.
