Could my stator be bad?

Motor is a 75HP from 1986. So I've had this recurring weirdness for a few years: my motor starts fine and idles well enough. When I'm running, sometimes it will just randomly...stop. Like, I'll be cruising along at 50% or slightly more power...my normal goofing off speed...when the motor will just drop RPS to zero rapidly, then just stall. Like I pulled the key out.

I wait for a few seconds, usually swearing at the motor, pump the bulb (which feels fine) and start it again. Vroom! Off I go, like nothing happened.

Fuel system is fine: all recently replaced rubber parts, from the gas lines to the primer bulbs, to the fuel pump diaphragm and check valves. It's not fuel. Carbs: soaked and serviced earlier this year with new floats and needles. I've been chasing this weird stalling thing for far too long.

Today I was reading symptoms of a bad stator, and everything is consistent with my frustrating motor, except that battery charging is not a problem. Now I'm thinking: could the stator be my problem? It's probably original from 1986.

Would love the opinions from guys on this board before I throw a $200 part at my problem.

I doubt it. When they start to screw up, they really screw up (as in call for a tow).

My best guess is a short to ground in the kill circuit or a bad ignition switch. You might try temporarily disconnecting the wire that kills the switch box and see if the problem reoccurs.

PS: I'm assuming that's a 4 cylinder with ADI ignition.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, 4-cyl., I don't know which ignition type. Serial is 0A984714. Interesting theory about the kill/ignition.
