Could anyone tell me whether this engine will be petrol or diesel please? (1988, 7.4kw)

Most outboards aren't diesel powered. Reason being is that most of the time the weight of Diesel engines prohibits their application. I know of no Mercury transom mounted engine being Diesel powered over decades of manufacturing and my association over those decades.

Quick answer if you don't believe the above.....smell the engine. If Diesel it will be with an oil tint and pungent, where gas is a sharper, lighter aroma. If you don't know what Diesel smells like, go to a filling station and pick up the Diesel fuel distributing line and put your nose at the end of the hose.

Remove cowling.----Post picture of powerhead.----Look for sparkplugs.-----Look for a 4 stroke timing belt.
