"1983 AQ125A Bayliner Capri... same old boat I've been posting about. Actually, it runs great. Sat up for a few years before I "rescued" it from certain death. Cleaned up carb & put in a kit. New plugs, new timing belt & tensioner. When I first got her going she started and ran perfect. I took it off of the outboard tank and hooked up the onboard tank then seems the problem started. However, I did have a leaking accelerator pump and the screw above the bowl was loose. I tightened those and stopped the leaks. Problem I have now is that when I throttle up it wants to bog down and die but if I accelerate faster it usually picks up speed with only occassional problems. Not all the time, but frequently, when I turn off the ignition it will cough and sputter and keep running till it bogs down and dies. It may take 30 seconds or more before it finally kills over. As far as running... it cruises great and runs smooth and seems to be fairly efficient on fuel. Tach is not working but by comparing to a map of the lake I'm getting roughly 4 miles or more per gallon of gas running about 25-27 m.p.h. on a 24 mile round trip (I put 10 gallon of gas in it and ran it out then checked mileage by points on the map. I had run about 40 miles total."

"sounds like you need to do so

"sounds like you need to do some more adjusting to the carb. sounds like you are running very rich down low also recheck your timing and also your points.. about the points get rid of them and put in a pertronix system.. did the pertronix set up on mine and made a world of difference.. something else if you are running it out of gas you are probably sucking alot of trash out of your tank, replace the fuel filter and fill the tank.. another thing, you need to get a tach so you can monitor at what RPMS you are running when you are having problems.."

"Regarding the engine bogging

"Regarding the engine bogging down during accelerator, that is probably related to the accelerator pump. Make sure it is free ant that the acceleration jet squirts fuel when you throtteling it up.

Regarding the engine not shutting off, do you have a 3-wire alternator? If so, you need either a diode or a resistor installed in the wire going to the alternator excitation.

The tach wire is the grey wire attached to the (-) of the ignition coil, Make sure the wire is attached there and that there is continuity between the (-) of the coil and the back of the tach."
