cough 1978 150hp

i have a 1978 150hp evinrude that runs fine but has a bad cough to it at idle , could it be carbs or hopefully not reeds?

Unless it is actually spitting gas out of the carb bore I doubt it is a reed problem, most likely carbs are the problem.

Check your thermostats and water pump.
The 'cough' might be a sign of lean condition caused by running cold (thermostats not operating but stuck open).

Most "coughs" at idle are caused by a lean mixture...if idle mixture screws are on the carburetor, try opening them to see if the condition improves.
