Corrosion warning

Hi All,Just a word of warning,my 50 hp Evinrude E-tec has developed a hydraulic fluid leak due to corrosion at the base of the trim piston housing,I purchased this motor in good faith after reading many good report's on the forum's,I now have to pay more than two thousand euro's to replace the trim unit, the design of the anode placement is obviously wrong ,I have had it serviced every year since buying in 2007,I own a diving center and this motor is on my rescue boat it has worked little but been well looked after,I have no faith in Evinrude product's anymore,so think twice before buying new and then having to pay 2000 euro after four and a halve years.

Corrosion normally has a reason. Got a pic of your installation and damage?
Than's for the reply,as you can see,the culprit is a aluminium bolt/screw with o-ring, corroded out, allowing the o-ring to pop out thus loosing the hydrolic fluid.located at the base of the trim piston housing, sadly it was not visible until removed from the boat.

As I answered you in the Iboat forum:
Looks like #16 on this schematic?

If so, I've replaced quite a lot of those in my time. One pointing outwards, one towards the transom.

One common factor in all cases was that the zink #26 in below schematic was above waterline and not submerged in water. Normally solved the problem by putting 2 sinks on #79 which is the lowest point. Be sure all ground cables are attached and clean!!

Thank's again for your reply,all*anodes*were*in-place and wire was*connected,I have asked my*mechanic*to install two more anode's right were the bolt is,let's hope that stop's further corrosion. The motor itself has been reliable, but these small thing's soon add up to not small amount's of money, the micro switch ,or snap action switch located inside the power lever/gear change has failed, replacement switch,145 euro,it is made by *********,but*actually*come's from China, max price,10 euro, seem's*excessive*to put 135 euro on top, maybe it's made of gold, take care.

Peter.

Hopefully you are using the original engine mounting bolts and not some hardware store SST replacement. The originals are 'neutralized' to prevent galvanic corrosion.

You don't sound very happy with your *mechanic*. Maybe you should find another one that works for nothing !!
