Hi everyone i need some help. I am new to this engine repair but im going to give it my best. I have a mercury 50hp outboard on my pontoon boat.
I just bought it and it was advertised as ready "to go". I havent been able to take it out yet lol. I had to replace the steering cables and now the water pump. My question is when i took off the water pump housing it had alot of corrosion on it. How do i clean it off without hurting anything.
I will be posting alot for help as i get deeper and deeper in fixing my engine.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Susan

Hi Susan, I would use a soft wire brush that looks like a tooth brush with some contact ceaner. Lightly scrub and spray and most of the junk should come off.

A lot of corrosion may be an indication that the impeller has not been changed in quite some time..... did you check the inside of the housing and the plate to make sure there were no wear grooves/scoring
