pulled engine,.. a mercruiser 120, 1986 model, because of a dead spot on flywheel where starter would not engage, now i find nothing wrong with the flywheel ring..could turn engine a little and starter would engage, the tag on the solinoid has the number "J1171 marine" on it,..i can't find any cross over to tell me if this is correct starter,..anyone know if it's correct ??....where should i look next for problem...the starter is delco remy..no other numbers that i see..

That is a COAST GUARD specification number stating the starter meets the coast guard marine specification....

It is not the part number.

look at this web site and look for your starter/part number..........this site sells parts..........

IMO, this day and age it would be silly to over-haul one of the OEM non-gear reduction starter motors, or to replace with a non-gear reduction motor.

Take a look at the HTGR/PMGR motors that are available.

don't think i need a new starter, it was suggested i try some shims to see if that corrects the prob. ...thanks for replies,.will let ya know what happens...JIM
