Correct RPMs 1983 140 hp

I have a 1983 140 HP Evinrude. This is the first outboard that I have ever owned and do not know what RPMs it should run at. It is powering a 20 FT Grady white overnighter. I had it out last week end and ran it at 2000, fine but slow. 3000 fine but still alittle slow and 4000 was good. But I do not know if it is ok to run it at that RPM.
I also have a 34 FT Tollycraft with two 454s and run them around 2900, so you can see I'm not sure of a good RPM to run the engine at without burning it out.

Re: Correct RPMs

The engine has a max rpm range of 4500-5500.
Max cruising should be max obtained -10%.
If your max rpm is 4500, then 4000 is on the upper limit as cruising speed.
If your max rpm is 5000+ (which is where you have max power), you are safe.
