"I think I have made a mistake

"I think I have made a mistake in changing out the oil in my stepdad's 1994 Bayliner mercruiser model 3.0L, 115 hp, 4.3 Liter 4 cylinder engine. He has had the boat since 1994 and I always change the oil and filter for him. I looked at the manual quickly when he first got it, and thought it took straight 30 weight. I relooked at the manual today and it says 30 weight is only good between 32 degrees and 50 degrees Farenheit! It says to use straight 40 weight for over 50 degrees. I have searched the forums and it seems like some folks still use SAE 30 oil while others use 15W-40 Shell Rotella. Could someone shed some light on this please; should I start using the 15W-40 Shell Rotella? I apologize for the question (as I know how oil threads are on my bike forum) but have had no luck in the search for this particular question on an older boat like this.
2)Is an older 1994 mercruiser in a '94 bayliner- model 3.0L a 4.3 Litre engine like the operation and maintanenance manual says? I thought the 4.3 L engine was a 6 cylinder GM engine?
Thanks, Michael"

"We use 25-40w mercruiser bran

"We use 25-40w mercruiser brand oil in all our service motors and even our stock boats,I don't think you hurt anything using the 30w just drain and refill.}"
