An anode with fin Part No. 31640Q4 now corroded is fitted to my sterndrive (late 70s/early 80s origin - Mercruiser 228 engine)and my dealer has supplied me with an anode which does not have a fin Part No. 76214Q5 which he says is equally suitable. Is this correct? Thanks in advance for any advice.

It works as well for galvanic corrosion. But the original style with the fin when adjusted in the correct position helps with steering. Older boats even with power steering benifit from a finned style annode/.

The original type/style can be still found with some research....

Four blade props require the anode without fin. The 3 blade prop will run either.

Some high performance and stainless steel props require the "HIGH PERFORMANCE" type show in the link posted in another page of the web site. It is ~1/2 the depth. I personally like this one as you rarely get your hands pinched when spinning the prop when doing servie related work.......

Hi, I am not trying to hijack this thread. While on the subject of anodes, I am going to slip my boat in salt water for 2 weeks. Do I need to install the "merc-cathode" to prevent damage to my engine and drive? I appreciate any input as I am a fresh water boater up until Jan. 2012. Thanks, Paul.
