Correct 454 XLI injector PPH

Hello everyone, Frustrated fellow boater here, I have been round and round trying to find the Corrrect injectors to put in my boat. 1997 454 XLI engines. It has the Pierburg pump that is 16-18 fuel pump pressure with return lines back to tank and not in a fuel cooler, just put two new ones on as matter of fact as they were weak. There were apparently two set ups for this motor depending on serial number. My fuel pump is also used on the 454 MPI engine as well apparently and going off serial numbers they could be one of the last few engines made before MPI took over as they end in 097-099.

Anyway, GM made what looks to be thousands of TBI injectors and a handfull for the 7.4 engines. PCM tells me these are discontinued from GM but they have a replacement for them but of course want $265 each for them, which in turn comes out to $1000 to do both engines, Napa and others online sell these from $45-75 each but figuring out the correct flow and ohms is quite challenging for me personally b/c I am not a mechanic. The injectors in the engines were running fairly well last season but I know they are aftermarket, Have RIN-554 which crosses to 90LB injector 218058 Napa part number, but now one injector is dribbling when running and lost its cone pattern and leaving sheen on water and running very rough & fat. I want to replace these injectors with the right PPH injector, Not too lean and not too rich. I am growing frustraded with PCM b/c they do not want to help with any of the old Crusader stuff, only new PCM stuff. Told me they lost all the information in the buy out on the old stuff, really? you just lost all the info on what you sold thousands of huh?

I guess if I must I will buy the OEM injector (which I do normally always buy OEM products) but everything on my engines have been different than what the book calls for, at least on the fuel system set up, so I am reluctant to buy $500 worth of injectors on this starboard engine, run fuel through them and they be wrong and Marysville not take them back.

My question for someone is have others ran into this issue? Is anyone using aftermarket injectors 7.4 XLI? What are the numbers off of the OEM injectors if you happen to have them or what have you crossed it to. I did see this conversation on the 5.7 XLI engine but I need 7.4 information.

I have found info saying 81lb injector or 90Lb injector on 7.4 TBI engines that have the 13PSI fuel pressure regulator which is what I feel I have due to the pump pressure readings. I can not find any solid information on the marine side and is mostly all trucks and car forums. I have also used the formula that converts HP to PPH and come up with 85-90 LBs from 310-330 HP. Question is are marine engines rated differently and will I run lean at higher RPM's or planing RPM. I do not want to run lean and will run rich if I must but would just like it to be right or in the middle.

Maybe I am over thinking it but would like to simply know facts but PCM will not help me so now I turn to forums. We do not really have Crusader guys here in town, they are all Merc techs.

For what its worth, its not surprising that PCM doesn't have the data...or more likely, the people you talked with don't know where to find it.

GM only used the TBI setup on their marine engines for a few years and then it was "orphaned" by the MPI systems (economy of scale). The good news is there is very little difference between the auto TBI and the marine TBI pieces.

I would suggest you seach for a local shop that specializes in fuel injector servicing and have your current injectors rebuilt...they may even have rebuildable cores already to go...nothing like being able to talk face to face to understand your options...there are many shops that advertised on the www if you can't find one locally but i would make that a second choice. There have been several thread on the GM TBI injector issue over the years but I don't keep an index...use the search function and check the crusader and mercruiser forums.

Finally, be aware that the PPH ratings have a good deal of variability to them so they should not be compared directly until you have verified they were calculated consistently.
