"Cooling water stream is weak, and at low idle stops. At high RPM motor stays cool. I replaced impeller and liner, without any change in the problem. Motor had not been used much and had a oil leak at the top seal of the lower unit. I am thinking that the water tube may be partially plugged with the oil reside. I would appreciate any help you can give on diagnosing the problem. How do I clean the tube without removing it from the engine?"

"You dont say what version of

"You dont say what version of the 4hp you have.

Model number ????

There are differences between the version with a FNR gear box and the one with just F&N.

In the former I think the grommet at the top of the water tube can give trouble (It does on my similarly designed 6hp) Not sure about the other though.
A wire pushed up the water tube will tell you if it's clogged up. One has a straight water tube and you should be able to push a wire all the way up but the other has a 90 degree bend at the top. Also you can connect a hose to it to flush it through.

As far as I can see neither version has a telltale on the cooling system so not sure what you mean by "cooling stream is weak". However if I've missed something the first thing to check is that the telltale, outlet, hose and connection at the engine, is not partly blocked."

"The motor has a stream of wat

"The motor has a stream of water coming from the underside of the motor, I guess this is the telltail. This is the stream I referred to as being weak and in some situations stopped. The model is E4RDHLCDE, and the S/N is BO100164. I think it is the Deluxe Model with gear shift and regular lower unit (not weedless). I don't understand the gear box terms you use."

"Yes the D after the R indicat

"Yes the D after the R indicates a Deluxe model with FNR gears.(gearbox, gearcase, lower unit what ever you prefer to call it)

So if it does have a tell tale check that it is clear.

Closer inspection shows that the grommet arangement at the top of the water tube is not quite the same as mine so hopefully wont suffer from the same trouble.

Check that you can get a wire all the way up the tube and/or connect a hose to it to make sure you get a good flow of water through.

Suspect you may have to take another look at the pump but if it's not overheating maybe theres no problem."

"VicS-Thanks for the very thor

"VicS-Thanks for the very thorough explainations. Now I need to take it apart again (4th time), and follow your suggestions. I am sure I can fix the problem this time. Thanks Bill K"
