Quick question. I plan on flushing my cooling system this week and I want to purchase coolant. I plan on using a traditional "Green" colored antifreeze with inorganic inhibitors. I usually look for a GM approved label coolant label, regardless of brand. Is this correct?

Out of curiosity do later engine versions including 8.1L recommend "Orange" coolant with inorganic inhibitors?

I suspect MakoMark will have answers.

Coolant - always an interesting topic....

I'd say follow the manual - if it had green in it, you should be ok with the same formulation...that said, color isn't always a good ID method.

the 8.1l call for use of DEXCOOL - which used to be orange and is likely to vary by brand name..

I know GM Marine used to call for 6038M (GM spec) coolant, at least thru 92. One of my 98-01 manuals call out 1825M. Both are green but something changed as the spec number changed...I haven't had a need to look into the differences.

FWIW, I have started using the all-makes-all-models coolant in my vehicles as the last time I flushed out my truck, the old green wasn't available...it has plenty of aluminum in the engine and hasn't had any issues...

Finally, I have always used distilled water (when I had a choice) and mixed the concentration as needed. Around here, there are lots of wells and the product can vary widely...distilled water ensures no surprises...
