Converting F50 to F60, is it possible ??

Hi,

I own a Yamaha 4- stroke (F50AET), which is slightly underpowered for my boat, I have been thinking of getting a bigger engine like an F80/100 which will be ok in terms of horse power but it would add another 60Kgs at the back of the transom and it would probably cost as much as the boat+current engine.
So does any one know of a way of converting the F50 to an F60, I believe they are sharing a lot of common parts and the block and all the running bits are the same. Mine is the carburated version (4 - in line carbs). Has anyone done it and could anyone provide some advise on what needs to be done if at all possible.

you could change the jets in the carbies or change the prop.


When you say underpowered do you mean takes too long to get on the plane or doesn't have enough top end speed?

I have already changed the prop to a shorter pitch, because it was taking too long to get on the plane and I was not getting the full rpm (5500) at full throttle, so I went 2 sizes down and now is much better and I can get around 5400-5600 rpm on full throttle.
What I meant by being underpowered is that the boat is 5m long and 500kg dry weight, the manufacturer recomments 40hp -80hp as a drive unit, with the current configuration of 50hp and s hort prop I get on the plane quickler but I can only manage under 20kts at full throttle, that is what I meant. I think the boat needs a bigger engine, but considering the costs of a new engine, I was trying to find out if I can push a bit more out of the current one.

If going for new jets, what would be the size, Please note I have already stripped the carbs twice because of clogged jets (all the Yam carburated engines have the same problem), do I need to change anything else?

I guess the only thing left to check would be the exhaust manifold in case there is a difference. This happens on 2 stroke outboards. It could end in a lot of effort for little gain.
