Hi guys. Nice site here. Know you probably get this question alot but I have a an older (89) Merc 9.9hp pull start kicker motor that I bought last sumer and it has turned into my main motor since I fish mostly restricted lakes. Is it feasible to convert this to electric start and how big of a job are we looking at?

And while I have your attention- my 50hp Merc runs and idles fine the few times I've been able to use it but has a tendency to stall when I engage. Can I make a carb adjustment that might help this?

Thanks for any help.

"Rick, can be done without too much work but will lighten your wallet by a bit.

An aftermarket starter, about 100 bucks. Also need a ring gear from Merc - 40 bucks. Starter solenoid about 30 bucks, battery cables, wires and a starter switch, figure another 50 bucks for that, plus maybe 60-100 bucks for a decent starting battery.

Now if you want to add the charging kit as well (charge stator, rectifier and harness) add another 200 to that total (or just recharge the battery at home).

All in 500-600 bucks - or you can simply pull the rope for free...

As to your 50 horse, sounds like it is developing a clog in the low speed jet - a disassembly and cleaning may be in order...."

"Thanks for the quick reply Graham. Does Merc sell a "conversion kit" that includes everything- less the charging kit? And, could this be ran off or with the 50hp battery set? Course, pulling the rope is pretty good exercise........"

"Yes, they sure do Merc part n

"Yes, they sure do Merc part number 50-90983A5 (or formerly 50-90983A3 if you can find someone with "old stock")

Includes the starter, ring gear, solenoid, rectifier, charging coil and wires - sells for about 250 bucks currently (came down in price from what I remember last time I checked)..."
