Controls confusion

On any one given boat are the remote controls specific to a certain make of motor? If so what about within the same make of motor, will controls currently running a 40 hp Johnson work for a 30 hp Evinrude or vice versa? Can someone direct me to a resource in determining what controls work with what motors?

A Johnson / Evinrude control with a big RED plug on the harness will work on a Johnson /Evinrude that has a RED plug on the motor.----Years 73 to 95 or so.--------Controls usually are matched to manufacturer and their motor.---------Mercury controls usually are not " plug and play " with other brands ETC, ETC.

Hmmm . . . I've got part of that Q Bobby, mines a gem of a '63 28hp Evinrude but I don't know what I am looking for that would work with it. I have been surfing CL hoping to find a 14-16' fishing boat with a console I can match it up to but I have no controls for this motor of mine. I've heard controls are specific to a motor make but what will match what I'm lost. Boats WO motors (of my liking) are a rare find on CL and I'd be willing to buy a boat I liked with a motor I didn't and sell the motor for the controls but I don't know what I should be looking for that might work with my 28. Probably looking for a 'needle in a hay stack' anyway, just didn't want to spend the extra dime $$.

Well you can look it up on this site !--------engine diagrams------Find the year.------Find the model.----Electrical harness and bits are shown..----But you can make most of that up if you understand 12 volts and wiring.----Throttle and shift can be found under 1972 accessories parts pages.

Throttle, shift and control box are my concern. Currently it's rope start. I plan on adding an electric starter as it has the starter bracket and use a push button start switch as it lacks the bracket and linkage for a electric choke solenoid. 1972 pages? Are you saying the cable sets were not available before '72? Which runs back to my original question . . what will work with what? I'm reasonably familiar with this site but I wouldn't have thought to look at the '72 pages for the cables that would work. I'll go there and check it out. Thanks!

Oh, Ok Thanks Kim, I'm beginning to get a picture now of what's needed. I guess I should pay more attention to how other boats in my area are set up.
