Constant problems, 1973 115hp Johnson outboard.

Alright, to begin my story.
I paid 315$ fr a 1986 larson silverline in non working condition (slow cranked)
In all, I have done this to the engine
Rebuilt carbs
New starter
New solenoid
New battery terminals
New wires to battery, to solenoid, to starter
New gas (50-1)

The problems...
I can start her up no problem out of the water. Shift her as ease. Give her gas. As if she was born to do it (kind of was)
When I gently slide her in the water the problems arise...
Would either crank loads and not atart, I would mess with choke and put starter fluid. Nothing.
And when she does start... soon as I would shift into forward or reverse it would die out on me. If I throw it hard in forward or reverse (pass the slowest speed) it would work(sometimes.)
I've adjusted the idle sped, but it seem it's already at its max setting..

I've yet to take her far from a rope throw length because I'm having so many problems.

I need help.. a lot of it.

When you rebuilt the carbs did you pull the jets and soft plugs?
I'm going to assume those are the black plastic/rubber looking things in side. I didn't remove them, just cleaned around. They seemed to move freely.
Do you know the history of the motor? Have you done a compression test and a spark gap test? How old are the plugs and wires? how old is the impeller/thermostat. It sounds like you have very little money into it so far, give it a thorough diagnostic. Compression test, check spark with a spark gap tester, confirm engine sync and the throttle butterflys open exactly the same time. Replace the fuel lines if you havent. Clean all electrical connectors with electrical cleaner and put together with dielectric grease. Change gearoil and monitor engine temps close (both heads and exhaust cover). Your gonna want to get a manual and go through everything good once if the compression is good. Without good compression nothing else really matters.

I don't know history, no :/.
Just know the last time it went out was last October before the owner put her away for winter.
I am still going to buy new olugs, just need to get the numbers for em.
How do I do a compression test? I plan on removing the lower thing (unit?) Later and going through it. Re oil it all and stuff.
I gr new fuel lines going to carb filter, and to carbs since they broke on me when I got the boat.

So you did not rebuild the carbs you need to get a couple carb kits and rebuild them properly before running the motor or you will end up with an anchor. I am sure there are videos on doing a compression test you can probably borrow a guage at your local part store. Get the compression numbers and then get back with us before spending any money on parts.

Hmky. How do I know what the compression numbers should be around?
When should I replace spark plugs? Should I just replace them anyway?

I replaced spark plugs finally. All were disgusting looking. 1 was even jet black and dry.
She starred up quicker.

Going to my storage unit later to grab a bill plastic bin so I can test in there, than drive 8 miles to the dock.
Will also take plugs out and see if all 4 are wet or dry.

Haha yea I read up a bit about them.
I can now atart my boat no problem, with no fluid (didn't know there's a choke where the ignition key is at...-.-)
And also, I asked previous owner if he was aware of this problem when he last used it. He said to adjust the idle rpm. Via the throttle cables.

Tomorrow after work I'm going to attack the wiring (dash isn't getting power, I gutted it. Gotta fix it so I can see rpms.)
Then hopefully can adjust idle rpm to its correct position and get her on the water.
