"Hello all, Disassembly of 70hp Power Head. I don't understand the manual that states "11. Check connecting rod and cap alignment with a pencil point or dental pick. Alignment should be correct at 3 of the 4 corners. Record alignment points of each cap for reassembly reference." It notes that rod and cap have raised dots and chamfered corners. Have looked but am not seeing raised dots or corners mentioned. Clues very welcome."

David at the little end of the rod there is a lubricating hole. This hole faces up so it catches fuel and oil runs down to lube the little end bearing.
There are four machined corners on the conrod and end cap these when aligned will have no step

"Hi Jamie, I see two little holes underneath each bolt holding the Cap down. Maybe this is something. How do I record alignment points per instructions above? Will it all be clear when I loosen the cap bolts and pull off the cap or is there something to do before loosening the cap bolts? Don't want to loosen the bolts until I am sure what I am doing."

"David,
This is a long detailed post....
You can remove the rod caps without concern...just make sure you do not rotate the cap 180 degrees and try to re-assemble it that way. So, if you have to, mark the rod and cap so you know which way the rod cap goes back on.

Also...DO NOT SWAP ROD CAP WITH A DIFFERENT ROD.
The rods and caps are not interchangable.

Upon re-assembly, you will note that when you put the bolts thru and get them almost down, that the rod cap can move around. Those bolts do not provide precise alignment. There is no pin to assist proper alignment...nothing.
So, you place the cap in alignment by feel, and use a pencil point, sharp awl, anything with a point on it to align the caps by feel. If the point catches in the break line between rod and cap...it is not aligned right.

Practice by doing one on the bench and you will see immediately what the issue is with alignment. It is a tedious operation."

"The rod is cast in one piece, then the cap is broken off, resulting in a matched cap/rod.

On the bench as Doug suggests, you'll see that the cap snaps into place effectively leaving no trace of the seam.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

The bolt head that connects the cap to the connecting rod is a star shape. I don't seem to have a tool for this bolt head. Is the tool a unique Johnson tool or can I get one at tool stores. Looks a bit smaller than 3/8".

"OK, caps off and all disassembled. Now what. The top and middle cylinder walls are scored as are the pistons. Will start a new thread."
