Confused on Mercury Outboard

I have a Mercury Outboard Ser #6461309, it has a 175 engine cowl on it, but a local dealer ran the numbers and it comes back a 200 hp ELPTO? He could not tell me which it was...a V175 or 200. The year seems to be 1984 according to him...any ideas?

Have to wait for "boat tech" to show up - he has access to the database where the horsepower is registered.

Merc serials (by themself) contain no usable information at all.

It is well possible that over the years the "hood" was busted and replaced with one off a 175.

According to my production lists (serial lists) I make that as a 1984 model, and since the 175 was not produced in that serial range it has to be a 150 or 200 horse if it's a 6 cylinder model...

Thank you Galamb for your quick response. It is a v6 and I ordered a shop manual from here to help with issues. Will most parts interchange from the two...150/200, or fixed the same way? I am good with regular motors, but not outboards..first one, but ready to tear it down and see what makes it tick.

That dealer was right, Your engine serial number comes up as a 1984 MERCURY 2.4L 200 ELPTO 200 H.P. (V-6) Model number 1200724

As far as the 175 engine cowl goes, Maybe the original one was damaged and he found this one a lot cheaper someplace.

Those cowls can be pretty expensive sometimes.;)

Good luck with it.:)

Thank you soo much Boat Tech!! This forum is awesome! I appreciate everyones time I'm helping me out...I will definitely have more questions going forward. Would you consider this motor to have a good reputation, bad, or indifferent?
