Confused about replacing the ENTIRE lower unit?

OK so here is my situation: I have a 99 Johnson OceanPro 200 and we hit a reef pretty hard last weekend and damaged the lower unit in such that the entire lower unit needs replaced. Basically I had my mechanic look at it and in conclusion he said that he'll undo the entire lower unit and put in a replacement. He is looking for a used one and I suggested just buying a new one as such from this website http://www.sterndrive.cc/mm5/merchan...ory_Code=SE306 in which after the water pump, drive shaft, etc...will be around $1700. I spoke to the mechanic and told him this and he said that a replacement lower unit would should run around $7000-$8000 and that for $1700 it must only be the shell for the lower unit and nothing else?
So basically I'm trying to get my head around if the lower unit (in the link above) that cost $845 is correct if I'm replacing the ENTIRE lower unit or would I need that and additional $5000-$6000 worth of other parts to replace the lower unit?​
 
That mechanic is blowing smoke up your butt..... or smoking something real good and illegal.

You can get the SEI lower unit and be back and running quickly....... It would take me in a driveway w/o power tools under 1 hour to swap them....... call sei and make sure you are getting the right one for your 200.
 
Just so I'm clear on what all I would need to order:
Lower unit(standard rotation) $845
Over driveshaft $150 (is Over driveshaft another name for the Upper driveshaft? The customer service person on the phone called it the Over driveshaft, but on the website I think they refer to it as the Upper driveshaft. If this is the case, how do I know if I my old unit has the 1 piece shaft)
Water Pump $60
Shift Shaft - the customer service from SEI said they don't carry those and I'd have to order one from somewhere else....any suggestions?
 
Just how bar is your old unit? You can probably use your old driveshaft and shift linkage

Hitting a reef that hard...... did you damage the transom??
